Feeling a little frazzled with all the festivities?
Here are a few tips to survive the holiday season.
To stay off Santa’s Naughty List – Avoid: Skipping meals. Avoid going grocery shopping while hungry – Same with holiday parties. Avoid sugar and alcohol. Avoid running from party to party, and avoid overbooking your schedule. Avoid leaving everything for ‘last minute.’ Avoid staying out late at night, or too long at each party. Avoid eating mindlessly.
To stay on Santa’s Nice List – Include: Eating a protein breakfast, daily. Have a small healthy snack before you go to the grocery store. Eat a small meal before going to holiday parties, or take your own healthy side dish, so you are guaranteed to make a good choice. Choose proteins, veggies and fruit over carbs. Eat healthy food choices before ONE indulgent dessert, in a ‘sample’ size. Drink water to avoid excess sugar and calories from alcohol, soda, or fruit juices. Eat slowly and chew every bite, savor your food. Get outside for some fresh air, sunshine and exercise. Relax with an Epsom salt bath, rubbing essential oils on your feet, yoga, meditation, or deep breathing. Plan down time to enjoy the reason for the season. Leave parties early to maintain a regular sleep schedule. Create a ‘to do’ list to prevent ‘last minute’ stress. Incorporate some healthy alternatives to those ever-so-calorie-dense traditional holiday meals.
Instead of ranch dressing/cheese spreads and crackers/chips try this recipe From the Institute for Integrative Nutrition:
Guacamole with Jicama Sticks
Prep time: 20 minutes
Yields: 4 people
1/2 small red onion, finely diced
1 small tomato, finely diced
1 jalapeno pepper, minced (use seeds if you like it hot)
1/4 bunch cilantro, minced
Juice of one lime
1/2 teaspoon sea salt
1/2 teaspoon pepper
1 large jicama
- Carefully cut open each avocado, remove the seed and scoop out the meat into a mixing bowl.
- Add onion, tomato, pepper, cilantro, salt, pepper and lime juice.
- Mix with a fork until you reach the desired texture for you guacamole.
- Peel the jicama and slice into sticks.
- Dip one into the guacamole to taste and adjust seasonings as necessary.
