Great Month To Test Your Inflammation!

World Thyroid Day is May 25th! May is also Arthritis Awareness Month. Arthritis is very common among those who have autoimmune conditions. May is Lupus Awareness Month, as well as Lyme Disease Awareness month.

I am so excited to let you know about this month’s sale at DirectLabs! I myself will be buying this one! I wonder if many others get this excited about testing their blood for optimal health?!

Inflammation is the root of many diseases.  The best way to detect inflammation in the body is to test your blood levels:  ANA, CRP, SED Rate, Ferritin and Homocysteine.

Homocysteine levels above 7 UMOL/L have been shown to damage the protective blood-brain barrier (leaky brain), and are linked to autoimmune diseases such as Alzheimer’s. High homocysteine levels are also linked to cardiovascular damage. Many autoimmune conditions, such as lupus and autoimmune thyroid disease (Hashimoto’s or Graves), increase the risk for heart attack and stroke. High homocysteine levels can also be a consequence of poor absorption of B vitamins, which may point to poor methylation pathways. (Test for MTHFR and supplement accordingly.) (Ref. Dr. Will Cole.)

ANA: Antinuclear Antibodies, is used to help diagnose systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) but may also be positive in cases of scleroderma, Sjögren’s syndrome, Raynaud’s disease, juvenile chronic arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, antiphospholipid antibody syndrome, autoimmune hepatitis, and many other autoimmune and non-autoimmune diseases. (Ref. Direct Labs.)

CRP: C-Reactive Protein: Tests for inflammatory diseases, infections, and neoplastic diseases. CRP is a more sensitive, rapidly responding indicator than ESR. CRP may be used to detect early postoperative wound infection and to follow therapeutic response to anti-inflammatory agents. Progressive increases correlate with increases of inflammation/injury. (Ref. Direct Labs.)

Sed Rate: Screens for inflammation, cancer, and infection. A high sed rate is found in a wide variety of infectious, inflammatory, and malignant diseases. (Ref. Direct Labs.)

Ferritin (Usually seen as part of a Serum Iron panel, along with a Saturation Percentage.) Ferritin:  Composed of iron and protein, Ferritin is a storehouse for iron in the body. Measurement provides an accurate picture of how much iron you have available in reserve. It is used to evaluate anemia and for diagnosing iron deficiency. Low Ferritin is a sign of iron deficiency. Ferritin is high with inflammation, infection, liver disease, iron overload, certain anemias and certain cancers (leukemia and lymphoma). (Ref. Direct Labs.)
